The Weatherization Assistance Program is designed to reduce the impact of high home energy costs for low-income residents. It helps to create a healthier, less drafty environment for people, especially the disabled, very young and elderly. The program also helps to lower state and national energy consumption, including the use of imported fuel. Lowering energy consumption helps reduce pollution levels associated with the burning of fossil fuels.
Services are free of charge to clients who meet income eligibility guidelines. Low-income renters (with property owner approval) and homeowners are eligible. Owners of multi-unit and rental property will be asked to share some of the cost. No home may be weatherized more than once.
The work to be done is determined by an on-site energy audit of the home.
Some typical Weatherization work that may be performed on your home includes:
- Insulating the attic, walls, floors and exposed pipes.
- Tuning-up, repairing, if necessary, replacing the furnace or heating unit.
- Eliminating air infiltration by weather-stripping and caulking around doors and windows.
- Focusing on energy-related health and safety issues while performing all work.
- Providing instructions on the care of the Weatherization materials and simple, low-cost/no-cost tips on how to save even more energy and money after the Weatherization materials have been installed.
- Health and safety issues are a primary concern of the program and are one of the reasons why each home must be inspected and tested.
